FISHING POINTERS & TIPS #1

How To Fish With Shallow Water Divers

1. Shallow Diver - 0 to 5 feet
A shallow diver is an exremely effective tool for fishing inside weed lines and around docks. It allows you to draw fish from great distances - big bass will come a long way to hit a shallow running diver!

2. Medium Diver - 10 to 12 Feet
Go with a medium diver in summertime when fish shift to outside weed lines. Medium diving crankbaits are extremely effective when cast parallel to weed lines, drawing fish out of the weeds to hit your crankbait.

3. Deep Diver -- 18 feet and deeper
Use a deep diver in late summer situations where fish are schooling on outside points or humps. Deep diving crankbaits trigger more strikes because they kick up the bottom and make a nuisance of themselves right where fish live. Even in the late summer, when many species begin night feeding, Deep divers are able to incite strikes in the daylight.

FISHING POINTERS & TIPS #2

Pitching A Jig Into Tight Cover

Learning to pitch a jig into tight cover without spooking a big fish takes practice. Here's a great way to train at home. Take a plastic coffee cup and put about an inch of sand on the bottom. Place the cup about 25' away and start pitching into it. As you get better, you can take some of the sand out with the idea you want to lay the jig in the cup without tipping it over. When you can do this on a consistent basis, you are ready to go after bass in heavy cover - on their terms.

FISHING POINTERS & TIPS #3

Rod Position Can Improve Sensitivity

When fishing plastics, you will get better sensitivity if you hold the
rod higher (around the 10 or 11 o'clock position). This allows the
line to drop down at a 90 degree angle from the tip and increases
sensitivity by transferring any activity to the rod quicker. Make sure
you only use the reel to pick up slack line. If you feel a fish, lower
the rod tip, reel the slack and set your hook.

FISHING POINTERS & TIPS #4

Choosing The Right Rod

A 6'6" rod with a medium heavy action designed with a stiffer tip to give you better sensitivity when working worms or jigs through heavy cover. You'll feel every tick, bump, slide and bite. Tip: in heavy cover pitch your worm or jig over a weed or small twig and work up and down in the same spot for a few seconds. Give the fish time to come to you - don't jerk the bait away before the fish makes its stalk. Remember, in heavy cover, big fish are cautious.
